All over the UK (and the world) local councils are adding cycling and bus lanes into existing roads, closing off and restricting access to roads, installing street “furniture”, implementing technology to track movement and implement fines. Through pressure from central government, local councils are spending a huge amount of our public money on these initiatives, which have various names, such as 20 minute neighbourhoods, 15 minute Cities, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, Low Emission Zones.

Objections from Residents are being overruled. Many are finding these plans are being implemented without adequate consideration or consent, or even knowledge by the majority. From a growing number of public meetings and people challenging their councils, its clear these schemes have not been properly considered to provide a net benefit to the community and often do not address or may actually worsten the issues they claim to solve. They can also have the most detrimental effect on the most vulnerable.

Here you will find information on how Communities and Residents accross the UK are getting involved in this and if you are interested in challenging your council, you may wish to see what is already happening and learn from those already doing so.

COLCHESTER, OXFORD, LONDON, GLASGOW, EDINBURGH, THETFORD

Colchester residents decided to get involved in meeting with and challenging their council’s policies on city planning, travel and net zero compliance. Many of these have wide reaching implications, use vast amounts of public money and have not been justified.

We have seen that these measures are not grass routes or local initiatives, but are being impemented everywhere all over the UK. Here we share information which has been presented by the Colchester residents to challenge and educate their council
