From Mexico to Thailand, teaching and practice of Transcendental Meditation in schools is transforming student happiness and performance. This 30 minute inspiring film gives hope for World Peace through large groups of experts practicing Transcendental Meditation.
Maharishi Effect
The Maharishi Effect is a phenomenon proposed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, suggesting that the collective practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) and the TM-Sidhi program by a small fraction of a population can create a measurable positive influence on societal trends, leading to increased order, harmony, and reduced negative social indicators like crime and violence. The core idea is that individual consciousness affects collective consciousness, with a critical threshold of approximately one percent of a population practicing TM being sufficient to generate this effect. This threshold is based on the principle that a coherent, unified field of consciousness, experienced during TM practice, radiates a field effect of coherence and positivity throughout society.
Research studies, particularly those using time series analysis to control for seasonal and weekly trends, have reported that cities and towns where around one percent of the population practiced TM experienced significant reductions in crime rates, with one study noting an average 16% reduction. The theory extends to a global scale, proposing that a group size equal to the square root of one percent of the world’s population (approximately 7,000 people) practicing together can generate a “Global Maharishi Effect,” leading to improved international relations and reduced global conflict.
The phenomenon is often analogized to the Meissner Effect in physics, where a coherent system repels external disorder, suggesting that a society with a critical mass of coherent individuals becomes more resilient to negative external influences. The Maharishi Effect is described as a “field effect of consciousness,” where the enlivenment of the unified field of natural law (Transcendental Consciousness) through meditation radiates influence, promoting societal well-being. Over 50 scientific research studies have been cited as verifying the effect at various scales, and the research has been compiled in extensive collections.
